American Legion Auxiliary – The Past and the Future

Harry B. Dorst Post 24 was formally chartered on July 14, 1919, meeting upstairs in the Conn Hall, 121 ½ N. Main, McPherson, Kansas.

It was only natural that the women who had stayed behind to serve and protect while their husbands, grandfathers, fathers, brothers and sons served their county would wish to form an organization continuing service to their community.  To fill this purpose, Harry B. Dorst American Legion Auxiliary Unit 24 was organized at the home of Mrs. Mary Bostian, 410 S. Main, McPherson, Kansas on June 13th, 1921.

Charter members were: Mrs. H. J. Ferguson; Mrs. Roy Cotterill; Mrs. Margaret Canfield; Mrs. J. A. Budge; Mrs. A. W. Bremyer; Miss Ruby Falk; Mrs. W. M. Burkholder; Mrs. Marvin Sweeney; Mrs. Ray Cranmer; Mrs. George Allison; Miss Clara Bremyer; Mrs. S. T. Bostian.

Initially the Auxiliary was organized by women who took on the day-to-day responsibilities of life when their male family members went across the sea during World War I.  Aware of the many fatherless families and the needs of returning veterans Auxiliary women vowed to continue their supportive roles.  This role remains the commitment of the American Legion Auxiliary today to the veterans returning from all wars.

Each year the American Legion Auxiliary renews their efforts for the children of America’s defenders –the children of fathers or mothers who have given their lives or for those who have returned disabled, and for all American children.  We must not allow any child to suffer on account of a father’s or mother’s service to their country.  Our fight is a fight for our children that they may have a future of freedom, security, opportunity and peace.

American Legion Past President’s Parley

The American Legion Past President’s Parley is a group of women who have served as President of their American Legion Auxiliary Unit.  The Past President’s Parley of Unit 24 was originally organized at the home of Helen Kubin in January, 1945.  The purpose of this Parley is basically the same as that of the American Legion Auxiliary with the added role of teaching and leadership.  Presently we have nineteen (19) living Past Presidents of Unit 24:  Madine Andes, Mary Jane Brungardt, Vivian Embers, Nan B. Hale, Yetta Irwin, Mary Ann Johnson, Betty Barchesky, Nancy Janssen, Vivian N. Johnson, Connie Ketterman, Lois Lake, Nadine Nichols, Gertrude Schafer, Barbara Stoffel, Cleo R. Lundberg, Mary Jane Rickner, Lorene Selack, Marjorie Suchsland and Carol R. Ek
